Why regional water needs to be tested — not assumed
Southwest Colorado stretches from the snowfields above Telluride and Silverton down through the Animas Valley, across the high desert of Montezuma and Archuleta counties, and up into the Uncompahgre Plateau. Six counties, half a dozen major river basins, and very different geology from one end of the region to the other. The water here either comes out of the ground, out of a mountain creek, or out of a tap that has traveled through decades of plumbing built for a mountain climate. All three have their own characteristic problems.
Private wells across the region commonly test high for hardness minerals, iron, and manganese, with arsenic appearing often enough to matter — it's a natural trace element in the San Juan and Uncompahgre geology, and it concentrates further down-valley. Wells drawing from fractured granite can carry uranium and radon; wells on the valley floor pick up nitrates from ranching and dryland agriculture. Spring snowmelt pushes sediment and turbidity well above what the same well delivers in late summer, and legacy mining districts add acid-mine-drainage influence to the watershed.
Municipal customers aren't off the hook either. The small-town systems across the region are treated and tested, but disinfection byproducts form in the distribution system, and lead and copper can leach from older galvanized or brass plumbing inside the home. Is Southwest Colorado's tap water safe to drink?
Municipal supplies across Southwest Colorado — Durango, Cortez, Pagosa Springs, Telluride, Ouray — are treated and tested, and most pass federal and state standards. But 'safe to drink' by regulation and 'good to drink' at your kitchen sink aren't the same thing. Hardness, arsenic, disinfection byproducts, and trace metals from aging household plumbing can still affect taste, smell, and long-term exposure, and the small-town systems across the region don't catch plumbing-related contamination behind the meter. The only way to know what's actually coming out of your tap is to test it on site.
What contaminants are most common in Southwest Colorado well water?
Western Slope wells across the region commonly test high for hardness, iron, and manganese, with arsenic appearing often enough to matter — it's a natural trace element in the San Juan and Uncompahgre geology. How often should I test my water in Southwest Colorado?
At least once a year for a private well — more often if you've ever had a positive result, if your area has known issues, or if your water changes in taste, smell, or color. After spring snowmelt, wildfire, flooding, or any work on the well or plumbing, test before you drink it. Mountain wells see bigger seasonal swings than lower-elevation systems, so a single summer test doesn't tell you what the spring runoff delivers. Municipal customers should test at the tap every few years to catch plumbing-related contamination the utility doesn't see.
Do Southwest Colorado homes really need a water softener?
Hard water is the rule across the Western Slope, not the exception. You'll see it as spotting on glassware, scale on faucets and shower glass, and shortened lifespans for water heaters and dishwashers — all of which work harder at altitude. A softener isn't luxury, it's the difference between appliances that last 15 years and ones that last 6. Salt-free conditioners help with scale, but they don't actually remove the minerals.
